A Brief History of Rancho Mirage, CA
Before it became the luxurious desert oasis that it is today, Rancho Mirage was known as the 11-mile spot. Just a stop along Highway 111 in the vast desert area of the Coachella Valley. Located between Cathedral City and Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage has modern settlements that date back to as early as the 1920s. However, the city didn’t become fully recognized and known until after World War II.
With wide open spaces and plenty of opportunity for growth, well-known Hollywood stars began to move to the area to get away from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles. Others came solely to visit and stayed at The Annenberg Estate. Among them were stars such as Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Fred Astaire and even presidents such as Richard Nixon and Ronald Regan. With such a rich, well-known population of individuals gravitating to the area, it’s no wonder that the city began to grow at an increasingly fast rate.
To accommodate the entertainers and business clienteles, resorts and luxury golf clubs began springing up left and right. Then, in 2002 the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians of Palm Springs opened the ever-popular Agua Caliente Casino. Today, the city is home to 12 golf resorts, new housing developments an array of shops and restaurants and an all-inclusive getaway experience.
