A Brief History of Palm Desert, CA
First known as Old MacDonald Ranch, the area of Palm Desert was actually first called Palm Village as it was home to an array of date palms that had been planted in the early 1920s. The first inhabitants of the area were Cahuilla Indian farmers of the now extinct San Cayetano tribe. It wasn’t until 1943 that the first residential development occurred in connection with an Army maintenance camp. That site still exists today, however it has been converted into an upscale shopping district that has become known as the Rodeo Drive of the desert. The city has only been recognized as Palm Desert since 1951, the same time the first housing development of the area was finished.
Today Palm Desert, CA is the heart of California’s Coachella Valley and is known as a major center of growth. Recognized as a popular retreat for “snowbirds†who double the city’s population each winter.
